Reflexology in the First Trimester of Pregnancy

It is fine to have a reflexology treatment during the first trimester of pregnancy if you would like one.

It’s a common myth about not treating in the first trimester and it is perhaps based more around protection for the therapist rather around any facts that reflexology causes harm.

The benefit of relaxation from a reflexology treatment can be immensely beneficial during a time when anxiety can be higher and often at a time when people have chosen not to tell friends or family their news. Some women also find it helpful with symptoms like tiredness and nausea.

Many women have reflexology before they even know they are pregnant.  Some people prefer to wait until they have had their 12 week scan and tests. If you do decide to have a treatment, always check that your therapist has some training or experience in maternity reflexology and of course, they should always carry out an individual consultation to make sure it is right for you to have a session.

Where does the myth come from about not treating in the first trimester?

There could be a multitude of reasons as to where the myth that you shouldn't treat comes from: perhaps old texts; lack of experience; student reflexologists being advised to avoid; and some health spas will not treat pregnant women. Whilst I don’t have the exact answer, it is perhaps because some don’t have the training and / or experience of treating pregnant women.

It’s obviously always a very individual thing for both the client and the therapist about whether they choose to be treated or treat. There is nothing wrong with a therapist saying they prefer not to treat if they don’t feel comfortable.  Just remember that doesn’t mean you can’t have a treatment during this time if you would like one.
